Intumescent and Sprayed Fireproofing

Depending on your project requirements, our teams offer spray fireproofing contractors as well as intumescent fireproofing contractors. While both are spray-applied, there are key differences that make each most effective in different circumstances.

In addition, our team also handles specialty exteriors and insulation, ensuring that we can meet all your exterior project needs with one crew.

Commercial Fireproofing FAQs

Fireproofing refers to the process of making a building resistant to fire. This is done in several ways, usually with a spray or rigid boards that can be installed over surfaces where spraying isn’t possible. We provide CAFCO-board, intumescent, and sprayed fireproofing.

Commercial fireproofing is important because it increases the time a building or property can resist or withstand a fire. This provides more time for people to get out and firefighting efforts to begin before structural integrity is compromised. It can also minimize damage — important if you work with flammable substances or in other risky environments.

We offer three different types of fireproofing: CAFCO board, sprayed, and intumescent.
CAFCO is a rigid board that provides fireproofing in areas where spraying is not possible, like in retrofit situations where mechanical equipment or heavy machinery is already in place. It’s also fast to install and can be put into place even when access to space is limited and spraying would be difficult.

Intumescent fireproofing is a lightweight coating that can be spray-applied to steel without changing the structural integrity or hampering the design. When exposed to fire, it increases in volume but lowers in density, delaying the heat transfer to the structure it protects.

Sprayed fireproofing is typically a cementitious coating that slows down the heat transfer from fire, but does not expand like intumescent fireproofing.

Intumescent fireproofing is a lightweight coating for exposed steel. It can be color-coated to match your designs, and it expands when exposed to fire, protecting underlying structures by slowing down the heat transfer.

Spray fireproofing contractors often also provide intumescent fireproofing, and can help you decide which is best for your project.

Fireproofing is done by professional fireproofing contractors. They’ll use rigid boards that are fastened to structures or fireproof your commercial building with a spray. Depending on your project requirements, Oaks Brothers will help you decide which fireproofing options are best for your project..

Commercial fireproofing typically starts at $2 per square foot for simple projects. For more complex projects, it can be up to $12 a square foot. Get in touch with us for a quote if you have commercial fireproofing needs

While fireproofing is not always required, it’s generally considered a good practice for commercial spaces. Your local building code will dictate specifics for fireproofing if it’s required in your area.
